Effects of Transurethral Thermotherapy for BPH

Abstract
Between January 1993 and June 1994, 65 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia were treated with transurethral thermotherapy. I excluded the patients with prostatic cancer. All patients had a clinical history, digital rectal examination of prostate, uroflow, Modified Boyarsky symptom score, postvoiding residual urine, PAP & PSA, transrectal ultrasound. Prostate ranged from 25g to 75g, the mean prostatic weight was 38.5g. All patients have been followed for a period of three months after transurethral thermotherapy.
Uroflow, Modified Boyarsky symptom score and residual urine were measured at I month, 3months. Overall results: Modified Boyarsky symptom score were decreased from 16.8 to 12.1, residual urine were decreased from 81.6cc to 56.7cc. Among 65 patients 46 patients were improved from prostatic obstructive symptom after transurethral thermotherapy.
In conclusion, both symptoms and obstruction caused by BPH could relieved by transurethral thermotherapy. More investigation will be necessary to know long-term effectiveness of transurethral thermotherapy.
